Excellent livre (en anglais) sur la photographie japonaise des années 60. 679 pages de très grande qualité. Je recommande vivement cet ouvrage.
I've been hoping for a comprehensive volume of Provoke-era work, and was thrilled that Steidl was the one to do it. They can be trusted to do a good job, and use great smelling ink :). This is a dense volume with a lot of important and striking images and text. I will be occupied for a while.I knocked off a star for the reproduction of the original magazine spreads. They are very small - two spreads to a page. I would rather lose some of the supplementary material and have this volume focus more on Provoke specifically. There is work by Tomatsu and Hosoe in there, which is great, but it came at a price of tiny Provoke images.
Five stars for this outstandingly designed (a sly love letter to monochrome itself) and well researched document of the Provoke magazine, its creators, and the particularly schizophrenic Japanese era in which the work was made! However, zero (ZERO!) stars for publisher Steidl, or any others involved in its minuscule print run!Japan's original legendary photo books are famously unattainable, so why should a stateside history of this calibre be allowed to go out of print so quickly? Shouldn't the goal be to showcase and educate about the great work of this radical movement in 1960's photography?I realize this was essentially a museum show catalogue, and they often see limited print runs, but then how is Alexander McQueen's 2011 MET show companion still available for $17 bucks and this went cold after about 3 months? I know the basic answer, but it still seems counter intuitive in light of an ever-increasing Western interest in this material.I actually came here to leave a glowing review of this book. I also hoped to buy a second copy. But now, less than half a year after it's printing, it's begging a couple hundred dollars, used! I'm not upset for me, I'm upset for people LIKE me who missed out but especially for all the writers and designers who put so much energy into this great book, whose efforts will remain largely unseen outside of a few collectors.I'm happy to revise / delete this review upon a second printing but, until then, I'm just really sad that the best book I've ever seen on this movement was gone in the blink of an eye.
I love the book but I do wish that some of the spreads were larger. That said it's great to have such a collection in one place.
Love it. I have seen many of the originals Provoke magazines which are now, long out of print and extremely rare and expensive, and this is a nice addition to anyone who is interested in Japanese photography from the 60's and 70's. Steidl books are always beautiful and this is no exception.
Far more value than anyone could imagine just reading about the book. When you actually flip through it and see the vast wealth of seminal images and critical text and information contained in this gorgeously printed Steidl publication, it's worth every penny (or pfennig or yen).JUST BUY IT!
